2 STEPS TO OPTIMUM ORAL HYGIENE
PROPHYLAXIS - WHAT DO WE DO?
PROPHYLAXIS - WHAT DO WE DO?
Prophylaxis Part 1: Diagnosis with X-ray and plaque stain
We look at your panoramic X-ray and determine whether you have pockets deeper than 4 mm. If so, there are two viable options:
- We will address your gum pockets and create a personalised treatment plan for you.
- You are currently a patient with another dentist who is treating your gum inflammation.
Regardless of whether there are gum pockets, our oral hygiene specialist will apply a plaque stain to your teeth to make any plaque (bacteria) visible.
With the video glasses you can see for yourself how well you clean and care for your teeth. You’ll master a range of toothbrushing techniques—manual, electric, and ultrasonic—and gain hands-on experience applying them for optimal oral hygiene. Our prophylaxis assistant will guide you through the benefits of interdental cleaning, demonstrating the effective use of dental floss and interdental brushes. A personalised ‘cleaning plan’ for interdental brushes will be created for your daily interdental care, which you can take home with you.
Prophylaxis Part 2: Therapy under the microscope
Following the diagnosis, all tartar, plaque, and discoloration are meticulously removed under a microscope using ultrasound, hand instruments, the AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master powder jet device, and polishers.
With targeted treatment and preventive care, we assist you in improving gum and bone health. Personalised instructions will help you optimise your daily teeth cleaning routine to restore and maintain completely healthy gums.
Prophylaxis is carried out exclusively with a microscope. Studies have shown that professional teeth cleaning without magnifying aid can leave up to 40% of residual tartar around your teeth, where harmful bacteria can thrive.
How long does prophylaxis last?
The length of your first oral hygiene session will depend on the current state of your oral health. The duration varies for each patient, as the amount of tartar and discoloration differs from person to person.
Typically, the first prophylaxis session lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours. The need for a follow-up session will be determined as your treatment progresses. We also recommend scheduling regular prophylaxis appointments every six months to maintain the long-term beauty and health of your teeth.
